CARMEL RIDGE

Situated atop a rocky narrow ridge in the hills above Carmel, the project emphasizes a seamless connection between the architecture, built landscape and natural landscape. One enters the property along a driveway up a steep and craggy stone slope. Upon arrival, the unfolding of bold architectural forms contrast dramatically beside the gritty natural sandstone, coastal scrub vegetation, and rolling topography.

The materials for the outdoor spaces extend the architectural palette, evoking a feeling of modern simplicity. The built landscape creates a bold sculptural quality that is a calculated response to the indigenous patterns that surround the built landscape.

In concert with Jim Jennings Architecture, we committed to a highly unified dialog between the architecture and the adjoining landscape spaces to establish quiet transitions from inside to out. This was an exercise in editing and searching for the essentials.
